Measured readings are labeled. All inter-gauge flows, water temperatures, fishing windows, scores, and 24-hour flow predictions are FlowState estimates.

How the model works

Current data + transparent estimates

FlowState reads provisional USGS discharge and temperature observations and the National Weather Service Truckee forecast. Inter-gauge flow is assembled from nearby gauges. The 24-hour flow prediction uses a damped recent trend and is limited to a ±15% change because reservoir operations can change without warning.

Water-temperature ranges start with a measured gauge where available, then adjust for air temperature, shade, time of day, tributaries, and the Boca cold-water contribution. The fishing score weights thermal conditions most heavily, followed by flow, a survey-informed relative fish-abundance index, weather, seasonal hatch potential, and trend. A thermal-risk rule can override the score.

Fly selections come from a Truckee seasonal hatch calendar and change with modeled water temperature, flow trend, and weather. They are starting points, not a substitute for checking the water and observing insects.
